Facial Oddities
Yesterday each class at school was carefully herded outside so that pictures could be taken for the yearbook.
What this means for the students is that they're required to dye their hair back to their natural black, and remove all makeup and piercings.
I was oblivious until I noticed the startlingly high number of girls without eyebrows.

Oh my gosh! Do Asian women not have eyebrows? Or do they pluck them or something. This is something I certainly never gave much thought to!

Well, It certainly would be interesting if they naturally didn't have eyebrows, but rather I think shaving/plucking and repainting is quite popular here.

I've noticed that here as well. Two completely different continents, yet the same view of beauty. Weird.

Hello, I'm still reading your page over (down?) here in Australia. Your post made me remember that when I was in Japan our science teacher got up on assembly and lectured all the girls about the dangers of shaving their eyebrows because it allows sweat to fall into the eyes. I don't remember the whole gist but I went to an uber-conservative Catholic school so he was most probably threatening us with blindness. I still don't understand why Japanese girls shave rather than pluck - I had a host sister who shaved the small of her back, I'm fairy sure. Some hair really needs to come out by the roots.

That just reminded me, they shave their arms as well, more than their legs it seems. When I first figured that out I was amazed.
